SEO for gyms

More enquiries from people who live near your gym.

Local SEO for independent gyms, boxing and martial-arts studios and boutique fitness in Australia. We fix the things Google, Maps and AI answers actually use to recommend a gym, then measure what comes out the other end: enquiries, calls and direction requests. Not “we rank number three”.

01Who it is for

Built for owner-run gyms. Not for franchise marketing departments.

Everything we do assumes one person can say yes to a change on the website, the profile and the front desk in the same week.

A good fit

  • Independent gyms with one or two locations and an owner who answers the phone.
  • Boxing, Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ studios competing with a franchise up the road.
  • Boutique fitness: strength, reformer and group-training studios that live or die on trials.
  • 24-hour access gyms where the sign-up happens online before anyone walks in.

Not a fit

  • Franchisees with centralised marketing. Head office controls your website and profile; we would be fighting your own brand.
  • Anyone who wants a ranking guarantee. We do not sell one, and you should walk away from whoever does.
  • Gyms that want to buy, incentivise or filter reviews. It breaches Google policy and ACCC guidance, and we will not do it.

02What is included

Two tiers. Both start with the same unglamorous foundations.

Foundation fixes what is broken and keeps it fixed. Growth adds the content, links and audits that let a single-location gym own its catchment. Prices are in AUD.

Tier 01

Foundation

$750–1,000per month

For a gym whose profile, reviews and pages have never been looked after properly.

  • Google Business Profile management: categories, services, attributes, hours, photos and a post every week.
  • A compliant review engine. Every member gets asked the same way at the same milestones. No incentives, no gating.
  • Citations and NAP clean-up so your name, address and phone number match everywhere Google checks.
  • On-page basics: titles, headings, internal links and a page that plainly says what you do, where and for whom.
  • AI-visibility basics: the profile completeness and crawlable facts that AI answers are assembled from.
  • A monthly lead-first report: enquiries, calls and direction requests before anything about rankings.
Tier 02 · Most gyms

Growth

$1,200–1,500per month

For a gym with a competitor that is already doing the basics, or a suburb worth winning.

  • Everything in Foundation.
  • Monthly content: real service pages for your classes, programmes and the suburbs you actually draw from.
  • Link and citation building from relevant local sources. No paid links, ever.
  • Structured data (schema) for your organisation, location, services and FAQs.
  • Quarterly AI-answer audits: what ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode say when someone asks about gyms near you.
  • A quarterly strategy call to decide what to push next.

Plus a one-time onboarding fee of $500–1,000. Minimum initial term of 3 months, then month-to-month with 30 days’ notice. No 12-month lock-ins. Full pricing and terms.

03The AI-search angle

AI answers are built from the same three things as the map pack.

When someone asks Google AI Mode or ChatGPT for a boxing gym near them, the answer is not magic. It is assembled from your Google Business Profile, your reviews and whatever pages a crawler can read. Thin there, thin everywhere.

01Signal

Profile completeness

AI answers lean on Google Business Profile for the basics: category, hours, services, photos, address. A half-finished profile is a half-finished answer.

02Signal

Reviews and what they say

Count, recency and the actual words. A steady flow of reviews that mention beginners, coaching and the suburb gives an assistant something to quote.

03Signal

Crawlable pages

A real HTML page that states what you offer, where, for whom and roughly what it costs. If it is in an image or an iframe it does not exist.

We make you eligible to be recommended and we audit the answers every quarter on Growth. We never guarantee placement in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT or anything else. The answers change from one query to the next, and anyone who promises otherwise is selling you a screenshot.

04The widget problem

Your pricing is a picture. Your timetable is an iframe. To a crawler, neither exists.

Most gym websites publish their prices as an image exported from a design tool and their timetable inside a booking widget. Members can read both. Google, its AI products and ChatGPT cannot read either, so they recommend the gym down the road that wrote it out in plain text.

What the crawler sees

<h2>Memberships</h2>
<img src="pricing-2026.png">

<h2>Timetable</h2>
<iframe src="https://booking.example/…">
</iframe>
The same page, twice. On the right there is no price, no class name, no time and no coach. Nothing to rank, nothing to quote.

What we do about it

We rewrite pricing and the timetable as real HTML on your site, next to the booking widget rather than instead of it. Bookings, payments and waivers stay in Gymdesk, PushPress, Mindbody or Glofox. The facts become text a crawler can index and an assistant can quote.

On Foundation this is part of the on-page work where your site allows it. If it does not, the website development service exists for exactly this reason.

05Exclusivity

One gym per catchment. First in, first served.

We work with one gym per roughly 5 km, because we cannot honestly try to win the same suburb for two clients at once and pretend both are getting our best. When you enquire, the first thing we check is whether your catchment is open. If it is not, we tell you straight away rather than take the onboarding fee.

Catchments are drawn around where your members actually come from, not a circle on a map, so two gyms close together in a dense area can sometimes both be clients. We show you the boundary before you sign.

06Timelines

What happens when, stated honestly.

Local SEO compounds. The first weeks are unglamorous fixes, the movement shows up in the second and third month, and the lead flow that changes your week arrives after that. We do not guarantee rankings, leads or memberships.

  1. Free teardown

We audit your profile, site and reviews against the gyms that currently win your suburb, and show you the gaps whether or not you hire us.

    Week 0 · free

  2. Foundations

Profile rebuilt, citations corrected, the review engine switched on, key pages fixed. Most of the visible change happens here and it takes a few weeks to settle.

    Weeks 1–4

  3. First movement

Profile views, calls and direction requests start to shift and the geo-grid shows you appearing from more of your catchment. Typically 60–90 days in.

    60–90 days

  4. Meaningful lead flow

Enough enquiries that you notice them without a report. Content, links and AI-answer audits compound from here. Typically 3–6 months in.

    3–6 months

  5. Month to month

After the initial 3 months you stay because it is working, with 30 days’ notice if it is not.

07What we measure

Leads first. Rankings are a diagnostic, not a result.

A rank checked once from our office tells you almost nothing about what someone three streets from your gym sees. So the monthly report opens with the numbers you would count yourself.

Enquiries
Form submissions and trial requests from your website, attributed to organic search where the data allows.
Calls
Calls placed from your Google Business Profile and from the tracked number on your site.
Direction requests
People who asked Google how to get to you. The closest thing to a walk-in that search can measure.
Share of local voice
We scan the map pack from a grid of points across your catchment and record where you appear from each one. You get a share, not a single rank checked from our office.

08Proof

The gym the founder still trains at.

Southpaw started as one developer doing hands-on local SEO for the boxing gym he works at. It is one gym, not a portfolio, and we would rather you judge the method than a number you cannot check.

The write-up is the whole job in order: the five things that were wrong at the start — a map pack held by two franchises, a timetable published as a screenshot, the wrong primary category, an old address still live across half the internet, and nothing consistent for an AI assistant to draw on — and the six phases that fixed them, with the measurement method stated up front.

The before-and-after figures are with the gym’s owner for written sign-off. Until they come back we publish the method and not the numbers: a bracketed placeholder tells you nothing, and a number you cannot trace to a source is worse than none.

How we did it, phase by phase

09Questions

The things a sceptical owner asks first.

Do you guarantee rankings?

No. We do not guarantee rankings, leads or member numbers. Nobody legitimately can — Google says so, and so does the ACCC.

What we do promise is the work, shown to you every month, and the numbers that matter: enquiries, calls and direction requests.

How many gyms have you done this for?

One in full, and it is the gym Toby works at: an independent boxing gym in Sydney’s inner west. The whole method is written up phase by phase on how we did it, including the five things that were wrong at the start and the order they were fixed in. Its before-and-after figures are with the owner for written sign-off, so we publish the method and not the numbers until they come back — bracketed placeholders would tell you nothing.

Southpaw is a new practice. That is why the terms are shaped the way they are: an initial 3 months rather than twelve, 30 days’ notice after that, every account in your name from day one, and a free teardown first so you can judge the thinking before you pay for any of it. The client list is capped at what two people can do properly, so if your catchment is taken we say so in the first reply.

How long until I see something?

First movement in 60–90 days: profile views, calls and direction requests start to shift and the geo-grid changes shape. Meaningful lead flow in 3–6 months. Anyone quoting faster is either guessing or already ranking for you.

What does it cost?

Foundation is $750–1,000 per month and Growth is $1,200–1,500 per month, in AUD, plus a one-time onboarding fee of $500–1,000. Minimum initial term of 3 months, then month-to-month with 30 days’ notice. No 12-month lock-ins. Full detail on the pricing page.

Can you get me more reviews?

We set up a review engine that asks every member the same way at the same milestones, with a direct link and a reply to every review that comes in. What we will not do is offer incentives, or ask only the people we think are happy. Both are gating under Google policy and misleading conduct under the ACCC, and both get profiles suspended.

What about ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

AI answers are assembled from the same sources as the map pack: your profile, your reviews and the pages a crawler can read. We make sure those sources are complete, consistent and say the right things, and we audit the answers quarterly on Growth. We do not guarantee placement in any AI product. Nobody can; the answers change from one query to the next.

Do I need a new website?

Usually not. If your pricing is an image and your timetable lives inside a booking widget, we fix that on the site you have. If the site itself is slow, hacked or locked to a builder that will not let us, we will say so and point you at our website development service rather than pretend.

Who owns the accounts?

You do. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics and domain stay in your name, always. We work as a manager on your accounts and remove ourselves the day we finish.

You already work with a gym near me. Can you take me on?

Not if it is inside the same catchment. We work with one gym per roughly 5 km, because we cannot honestly try to win the same suburb for two clients. Tell us where you are and we will say straight away whether your area is open.

Where are you based?

Sydney. We work with gyms Australia-wide remotely, and the geo-grid scans, profile work and reporting do not care where we sit. What matters is that the founder still works in a gym and knows what a trial-class enquiry is worth.
